Gender-bending Green Desire in Shakespeare's As You Like It

More so than in any of his other plays, William Shakespeare played with ideas of gender and his audience’s expectations about the pastoral in his comedy As You Like It. He wrote the ultimate “boy meets boy-playing-girl-dressed as-boy-pretending-to-be girl” comedy and worked with —and against — the long-standing traditions related to pastoral plays and poems.

In this, the first of the season’s pre-show talks co-sponsored by the Theatre Circle and the Department of Theatre and Drama, Professor Joan Pong Linton will explore these aspects of transgressing gender and trespassing the pastoral.

The Department of Theatre and Drama will present As You Like It at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre, November 13, 14, 17-21 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2:00 matinee on November 21.
