Brochure image for A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler

“A musical made up of sex, death, memory and midsummer magic … confirms Sondheim's peerless skill as a musical dramatist.” The Guardian

The Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center closes its 2009-2010 season with A Little Night Music directed and choreographed by Award winner George Pinney. A grandmother tells her granddaughter that there are three types of smiles on a summer night: one for the very young who know nothing; the second for foolish adults who know too little; and the third for the very old who know too much. This magical musical set in turn-of-the-century Sweden, where affairs of the heart are uppermost in everyone's thoughts, reveals all these smiles as mismatched mates, illicit lovers both unfaithful and insanely jealous, and unhappily lonely singles come together to spend “A Weekend in the Country.” The result is a sizzling remixture of romance that the New York Times calls A Little Night Music “heady, civilized, sophisticated, and enchanting” as Stephen Sondheim gives us “plaintively memorable waltzes” and “breathtaking lyrics” full of “sassy, effortless poetry.” What more would you expect from this year’s multiple award winning Collins Lecturer? A Little Night Music won a host of Tony’s itself, including Best Musical. Enjoy this romantic adult fairy tale that will have you waltzing into the spring night.

“Heady, civilized, sophisticated and enchanting. Good God! An adult musical!” New York Times
