Em Singleton is in their 3rd year of studies in linguistics, music composition, and viola. They have had their music presented at IU’s Grunwald Gallery, University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall, Penn State New Music Festival and Symposium, University of Florida, Princeton University’s Taplin Auditorium, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Petaluma Arts Center, Historic Thomas Center, St. Augustine Music Festival, and Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn. In 2021, Em held a fellowship writing for the National Youth Orchestra.
At IU Em has performed in the pit of Highway 1 USA (IU Opera), Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (IU Theatre), and Anne Frank (IU Opera), as well as recording and performing Daniel Whitworth’s scoring of Phil for Short live-to-picture for the Library of Congress’ “Cinema’s First Nasty Women” restoration project. Em also performed original songs at the 2023 Granfalloon Festival Handmade Market and can sometimes be found playing at local farmers’ markets. Outside of classes Em serves on the leadership committees for UnderLings, IU’s undergraduate linguistics club, and the IU Student Composers Association.
