Design & Technology M.F.A.

We are recruiting designers for the 2017-18 school year

We respect and encourage the unique talents and potential of each individual. Our program integrates classroom theory with studio practice, providing design, production, and leadership experiences that emulate the scale, complexity and aesthetic integrity of professional regional theatres.

The principals of analysis, research, adaptation, invention, organization, and communication are fundamental to success in the evolving field of Design Tech—and they are central to our training.

Under the guidance of mentors who excel at their profession, our students achieve an enduring, well-rounded knowledge of the theatre arts. They learn to use research methods essential to their specialization, and gain the effective collaboration skills needed for mounting excellent productions in the performing arts.

Additional information about Design and Technology can be view in our program brochure.

Letter from our faculty

Dear Prospective Student,

It is with pride that the IU Design and Technology faculty share our programs and curriculum with prospective students. Our faculty is comprised of working professionals who are active and recognized throughout the country and internationally. They are engaged with prominent theatre, dance, and opera companies, as well as with cutting-edge issues in the performance and entertainment industries.

We welcome conversations with talented students seeking an M.F.A. degree with concentrations in Costume Design, Costume Technology, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, and Theatre Technology. Secondary areas of focus include Sound Design, Props, and Scenic Painting.
We prioritize intellectual engagement, collaboration, and the development of a strong aesthetic, as expressed through artistic and technical skills. Our faculty closely mentors students through their three-year tenure at IU.
As students begin to recognize the depth and breadth of their potential, we help them refine their career goals and build upon a solid foundation of professional practices. Our aim is to ensure their sustainable and rewarding livelihood as artists, artisans, practitioners, and scholars. In consultation with a faculty advisor, and built upon weekly mentoring sessions and end-of-semester reviews, courses and production assignments are fine-tuned to meet the evolving talents of each student.

Please look closely at the details of our program descriptions, including the number and variety of production assignments on the IU theatre stages. As a member of our program, you will work on our Mainstage and Indiana University Summer Theatre productions. You’ll find numerous additional opportunities to assist with student projects, study overseas, and participate in internship experiences. This kind of technical experience leads to rich portfolios and solid progression in your early career.
