Sydney Poteet is a senior at Indiana University studying Contemporary Dance and Journalism/ Public Relations with a concentration in Strategic Communication. In her hometown of Overland Park, Kansas, Sydney trained at Above Barre Dance Academy under the direction of Chelsie Klein and Jennifer Jarman. She was also a part of Defy Dance Project, under the direction of Haley Kostas.
In her time at IU, she’s had the privilege of performing Bill T. Jones’ D-man in the Waters, the original re-staging of Rennie Harris’ Home, and Stephanie Pizzo’s Someone’s Keeper. She has also performed in Liz Shea’s Ascension (Into the Ether), Stephanie Nugent’s Land, Bone, Breath in Shifting Landscapes (2020) and in Wrecking Orlando/Gender is Concept by Stephanie Nugent in Making Spaces (2019). Recently, Sydney was part of a three-month residency with Israeli choreographer Noa Shadur and performed her work Suddenly We Were All Alone. In IU’s Mexico Remixed (2019), she had the opportunity to dance with Company Danzante.
Additionally, she has choreographed works for the Advanced Choreographic Investigations showcase, Ephemorous (2019), the Junior Choreographic Performance Projects showcase, Choreographers: HATCHED (2018), and for University Players’ SLIP (2018). Sydney’s performed in IU Theatre & Dance's New Moves (2017, 2018 & 2019), and the Junior Choreographic Projects (2016 & 2017).
