The M.F.A. in Dramaturgy is a three-year program designed for collaborative, creative thinkers interested in deepening their knowledge of the theatre in order to shape the future of the art form. Students will develop an understanding of the role of dramaturg as arts leader and creative producer, and gain considerable experience in the development and production of new plays, as well as musicals and classic texts. They will explore dramaturgy in community-engaged work, contemporary dance and multidisciplinary performance.
With only three students accepted into the program at a time, each dramaturg will benefit from the mentorship of experienced faculty and nationally recognized guest artists, and have an opportunity to shape their course of study based on their goals and interests.
Applicants to the M.F.A. in Dramaturgy should submit a short (2-3 page) personal statement of objectives outlining what they hope to accomplish during the program and their reasons for applying. Applicants should submit a writing sample (maximum 1200 words) that demonstrates their critical thinking and research skills; they also have the option to include a sample of a dramaturgical protocol they have created – such as a research packet, program copy, study guide or lobby display material.
For the application to be complete, we will need the following from each applicant:
-
an official transcript from every accredited US college or university you have attended as an undergraduate (any major is acceptable; you will be judged on your work and experience.)
-
three letters of recommendation
-
a personal statement of objectives
-
a resume or CV
-
a writing sample
