MIGDALIA CRUZ is a Bronx-born, award-winning, multi-platform, playwright, lyricist, translator, and librettist of more than 60 works for stage, radio, film, TV, and podcast, performed in 150 venues in 40 cities in 12 countries.
An alumna of New Dramatists, she received 7 major U.S. grants, and was named the 2013 Helen Merrill Distinguished Playwright. María Irene Fornés nurtured her voice at INTAR. Latino Chicago Theater Company helped Migdalia hone it as their playwright-in residence. She is a master teacher of playwriting with the Fornés Institute and at various universities and colleges. She is co-chair of the DGF Playwriting Fellows 2020-21 with Lucy Thurber; mentors the NYC Latinx Playwrights Circle; and was commissioned in 2020 by Nylon Fusion, Planet Connections, The Homebound Project, Clubbed Thumb, The Flea, and INTAR and in 2022 by Kitchen Dog (Dallas). Recent live productions: Lives of the New Kind of Saints: a geo-located piece with music/sound design by Cristian Amigo @INTAR/Battery Park (Nov 2020), and PlayON!Richard III (Aug 2020) & Macbeth (Aug 2021) in Sunderland, England @TheatreSpaceNorthEast and in 2022@UCSD. Also, in 2021, her play YORICK’S LAST LAUGH: a dead comedy jam Wherein He Spills the “T” About the Danish Royal Family premiered at Shakespeare Dallas. Her PlayOnMacbeth is now a podcast with Next Chapter Podcasts, and will also be presented at USD/Old Globe April 2022. In June 2022, her “Dinner With Dee” play will premiere at Kitchen Dog Theater (Dallas). Her translations of Macbeth & Richard III were recently published by ACMRS Press, and she was featured in Fifty Key Figures in LatinX and Latin American Theatre, published by Routledge Press in February 2022.
