IU Theatre’s first ever virtual season continues with Little Women: The Broadway Musical by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic American novel, this Civil War-era story of love and family stands the test of time. Little Women follows the adventures of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested – at least not until she weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in 19th century America. This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, and hope. The relationships between these four sisters, and the March family, are so impactful, especially during this time when we’re often apart from those we love.
Little Women is directed by Chika Ike, an IU Theatre alum, a Drama League New York Fellow, and a Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Gielgud Directing Fellow. Ike is a member of Victory Garden’s Directors Initiative, the Women’s Project Theatre Director’s Lab, and an ensemble member of the Gift Theatre, where she also serves as the director of the 4802 New Play Residency.
Joining Ike on the creative team are faculty DJ Gray (Choreographer) and Terry LaBolt (Musical Director), M.F.A. candidates Erin Barnett (Costume Designer), Rachel Rose Burke (Scenic Designer), Russell Long (Lighting Designer), Ben Ramos (Technical Director), and undergraduate Grace Leckey (Sound Designer). The cast includes Ben Ballmer (Laurie), Jessie Bittner (Marmie), Kevin Dolan (Mr. Lawrence), Amanda Fawell (Meg), Kabir Gandhi (John Brooke), Kate Glaser (Aunt March), Casey Kwon (Amy), Robbie Russo (Professor Bhaer), Caroline Santiago Turner (Jo), and Tiana Williams (Beth).
