Two IU Theatre Playwrights selected to participate in National Playwriting Program's Region III Kennedy Center Festival

Kaela Garvin's one act play The Ladies' Room and Aaron Ricciardi's 10-minute play Him & Her & Gay Men in General have both been chosen to participate in the National Playwriting Program's Region III Kennedy Center Festival in Madison, Wisconsin.

 The plays were both selected through a blind reading process by readers from NPP's Region VIII, and have received an invitation to the Region III festival. 

The festival is hosted by Madison Colege in partnership with UW-Madison and Edgewood College, and will take place at the Kennedy Center in Madison WI January 8-13, 2019. 

About Kaela

Kaela Mei-Shing

Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin is a playwright, producer, and performer who hails from Mountain View, California by way of Brooklyn. She's the current M.F.A. second year writer at Indiana University.
At IU: workshop productions of The Ladies' Room & High School Coven; upcoming production Haus of Mirth; readings of The Well-Tempered Clavier & Butter Knife; Calpurnia in Julius Caesar; variety production Consciousness/Power.

Kaela is a founding member of Undiscovered Countries, a Brooklyn-based incubator of new & developing queer art. Kaela's plays have included New York productions at Ars Nova, Dixon Place, Tom Noonan's Paradise Factory, the Secret Theater, & the New Ohio; she has performed at LaMama, Ars Nova, Dixon Place, the Duplex and other New York venues. Her play Butter Knife recently received three awards from the Kennedy Center: co-winner of the Mark Twain Comic Playwriting Prize, the second place Paul Stephen Lim Playwriting Award, and a distinguished achievement Paula Vogel Playwriting Award. About Aaron

Aaron Ricciardi
Aaron Ricciardi is a New York City-based actor, playwright, lyricist, and essayist, originally from Coral Springs, Florida, who is the 3rd-year writer in IU’s MFA Playwriting program.

At IU: Nice Nails, Resting Bitch Face, Call Me Crazy: The Lyrics of Aaron Ricciardi, Can I See Your Face? For IU Summer Theatre: Joe Schmoe Saves The World (Lyon).
Aaron's play with songs The Travels (music by Kelly Hoppenjans) was produced as part of the 2014 New York Musical Festival. As an actor, Aaron has worked with TheatreworksUSA, Ugly Rhino, and Musicals Tonight, among others, and he has studied with Steven Lutvak, Craig Carnelia, Randy Graff, and Philippe Gaulier.

Aaron is a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop, and his writing has appeared in The Huffington Post. Aaron graduated from the Theatre program at Northwestern University, where he studied playwriting under Laura Schellhardt.
