Jeff Baldwin is a seasoned technical director, educator, and automation specialist with more than 15 years of experience in theatrical production and stage technology. He serves on the USITT Board of Directors and is the Chair of the Research and Creative Endeavors Committee, supporting national-level initiatives that advance scholarly inquiry, innovation, and professional practice in technical theatre.
Baldwin is the Head of the Theatre Technology graduate program at Indiana University, where his teaching and research focus on motion control systems, scenery automation, and the integration of critical safety components into both pedagogy and industry workflows. His recent publication, “The Height of Safety: Mobile Elevated Work Platform Training in the Live Entertainment Industry” (TD&T, Vol. 61, Issue 4), reflects his commitment to improving safety standards across the field.
His professional work includes automation programming, engineering, and technical consultation for regional theatres and academic institutions across the country, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Gulfshore Playhouse, the Musical Arts Center, and the University of Oklahoma. His prior service in a Marine Corps Raider unit continues to shape his leadership style, emphasizing clarity, safety, and team cohesion.
