Dance B.F.A.

The practice of performance

All of our students are performing members of the Indiana University Contemporary Dance Theatre. They perform in the faculty/guest artist concert and dance in student works. Seniors produce a concert each fall.

Our program is supported by three full-time faculty and several adjuncts within the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance. Professors from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, the Department of Kinesiology, and the Jacobs School of Music also teach in the major. Guest artists of national and international renown also work with our students each year, setting choreography and teaching in the curriculum.

Our students find other performing opportunities with the IU Opera, our Musical Theatre Program, the African American Dance Company, and Bloomington’s local modern dance company, Windfall Dancers. Dance majors also have opportunities to perform nationally and internationally at various festivals and conferences.

Combining the degree with a minor

Indiana University offers several minors to compliment the B.F.A. in Contemporary Dance. Our department offers two undergraduate minors for students majoring in other subjects—a minor in Theatre and Drama and a minor in Dance. Dance majors may also minor in Theatre and Drama, but only one class may count towards both the major and minor.

Some students combine the degree with a pre-physical therapy track. They may pursue minors in business through the Kelley School of Business, or be interested in Liberal Arts Management Program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
